Normal Fracture and Shear Fracture of Springs
Based on the intersection angle between the macroscopic orientation of the fracture surface and the maximum normal stress, fracture modes can be divided into two types: normal fracture of springs and shear fracture of springs.
1. Normal fracture of springs: The orientation of the macroscopic fracture surface is perpendicular to the maximum normal stress. It commonly occurs in cleavage fractures or scenarios with high deformation restraint, such as fractures under plane strain conditions.
2. Shear fracture of springs: The orientation of the macroscopic fracture surface aligns with the direction of the maximum shear stress and forms an intersection angle of approximately 45 degrees with the maximum normal stress. It frequently takes place under conditions where slip deformation is unrestrained or slightly restrained, such as tearing under plane stress conditions.
